First time in Manchester?
If you’re specifically travelling to Manchester to join the Northern Belle, it’s well worth arriving a little early or sticking around a while after. A place where industrial heritage meets modern sophistication, Manchester offers an abundance of culture and fine dining — the perfect prelude to a day aboard Britain’s most elegant train. Here are some of our recommendations:
Northern Quarter
A stroll through Manchester's Northern Quarter is the best way to experience the character and charm of this unique city. The Northern Quarter features an abundance of independent clothing shops and record stores, as well as an array of Victorian pubs and chic bars and cafes. The Northern Quarter's unique and authentic atmosphere is not to be missed!
Manchester Art Gallery
For two centuries, Manchester Art Gallery has stood at the heart of city life. Originating from the Royal Manchester Institution for the Promotion of Literature, Science and the Arts, founded in 1823, it became part of the Manchester City Council in 1882. Today, the gallery remains free and open to all — a space for civic reflection, creativity and imagination — championing art as a force for positive social change.
Alexandra Park
Alexandra Park opened to the public in 1870 and was designed by Alexander Hennell. Its layout was considered experimental for the time, featuring sweeping curves and oval pathways that broke away from the strict, formal designs typical of earlier Victorian landscapes. Nestled between the lively communities of Whalley Range and Moss Side, just off Princess Road, the park spans 60 acres of green space.
Best Place for Breakfast - The Smithfield Social
The Smithfield Social is open all day for dining and drinking, but the brunch menu is what makes this place so popular. As well as the classic options, you can also choose from delicious dishes such as the truffle and pecorino hash browns, steak and eggs and Shakshuka! Make sure you book a table for brunch, as it is one of the most popular places in Manchester (and for good reason)
Best Place for Lunch - The Refuge
Whether you're in the mood for eclectic small plates or a hearty Sunday Roast, the refuge offers a chic and relaxed dining experience, day and night. We'd like to give a very specific shout-out to the legendary Sunday Roast Sharing Platter; perfect if you're feeling a little fragile after a night out in Manchester or are just looking for some comfort food after a long day of exploring the city.
Best Place for Dinner - The Spärrows
The Spärrows is a modern continental restaurant specialising in traditional Swabian Spätzle, along with handmade dumplings and pasta inspired by the culinary traditions of Central Europe. Its dishes evoke the flavours of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire and the German-speaking regions of Europe.
The restaurant’s signature dish is Spätzle — fresh egg pasta that represents the diverse culinary heritage of Swabia, a region spanning Germany, Switzerland, Alsace, Austria, and South Tyrol in Northern Italy.
Well, there you have it! If you're thinking of booking a Northern Belle train journey from Manchester, why not make a mini-break out of it?!
